The Basic Handgun Safety & Self Defense Course

2. You will receive the curriculum and written test via an email attachment. Study at your own pace. Watch the accompanying videos on this website. Complete the written test and email it to us at info@assaultprevention.info

3. After we have scored your written test we will schedule an hour together at Bill’s Gun Range North or South to complete the shooting skills portion of the course and answer any questions you might have. You will then receive your training certificate and instructions for the application of your Permit To Carry in the state of Minnesota.

Assault Prevention Note: This course is not only for those who are intending to obtain their Minnesota permit. There is great benefit in taking this course if you are interested in how a handgun fits into self defense in general. Although this course has a specific focus on Minnesota state statutes, all states in the US allow for the justifiable taking of life under certain conditions.

Course Description

Many states have passed some type of personal protection act that allows a citizen who does not have a criminal record and passes certified training to carry a firearm for personal protection. While statistics show the chances of you actually using a handgun for self defense remain incredibly low, you may find carrying one makes you feel more secure. If so, we recommend you participate in our Basic Handgun Safety and Self-Defense Course. This essential course helps participants understand the legal aspects of carrying and using a handgun for self-defense. It is not a gun familiarization course – it is a handgun self-defense course. You do not need to have had prior handgun experience to participate in this course.

The curriculum includes 6 Lessons

1. The Statistical Realities

2. The Legal Foundation: Use of Force & Justifiable Taking of Life

3. The Four Rules of Lethal Self Defense: based on case law

4. What Happens in the Aftermath of a Shooting? High Stress, Rendering Aid, Reporting to Law Enforcement, Post Stress Trauma

5. Handgun Basics: How to Choose a Handgun & Ammunition, How to Shoot a Handgun, Common Shooting Problems, Clearing Malfunctions & Misfires, Gun Safety

6. The Minnesota Personal Protection Act

This course meets the qualifications, upon successful completion, for you to apply for your Permit To Carry a Pistol within the state of Minnesota. The course fee includes all class materials and targets for the Range. You are responsible for the handgun, ammunition, eye & ear protection. You may provide your own or rent them at the gun range. You are also responsible for range lane rental when you shoot the qualification.

At the Range: All handguns must be cased unless you are on the range.
